For the third consecutive year, poker pro Annie Duke and actor Don Cheadle are hosting the Ante Up for Africa poker tournament at the World Series of Poker, July 2 at the Rio, to support victims of the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan. Duke, runner-up on the latest season of The Celebrity Apprentice, sat down at a table with LVM's Paul Szydelko. No bluffing was involved.
Talulah G (Fashion Show, Boca Park, Red Rock Resort).
I'm a mix of rocker chick, but not over-the-top. I'm really a stretch pants and T-shirt kind of girl but a little bit funked up. I'm the anti-suburban mom.
Cut.
It's one of our favorite restaurants in L.A. Now it's over at The Palazzo, which is fantastic.
Sen of Japan (8480 W. Desert Inn Road) and Naked Fish's (3945 S. Durango Drive).
Those are both so good and they're open late and they're small and they're low-key and they're not super-duper expensive and the food is just fantastic at both those places.
Tom Jones.
He rocks. He's great. My favorite bands are, like, The Vandals, The White Stripes, Violent Femmes, Arctic Monkeys. So how good does he have to be that I think he rocks? That's all I'm sayin'.
Penn & Teller.
You have magicians who are magicians and that's what they do, and then you have Penn & Teller, who turn it into something completely other. It's challenging you to think about what entertainment really is.
Blue Man Group. I like things that don't shoot down the middle. It gives me some kind of weird hope that Blue Man Group is so popular. Because they're weird, they're kind of out of the box. And yeah, they turned it into something that's obviously a money-making machine.
Nightclubs.
There's this traveling nightlife where you go to a different place depending on the night. They've done a really good job of that, and that's a lot of the reason why people really exit L.A. during weekends. That's a really effective thing Vegas has done.
The World Series of Poker. From the perspective of players, I think the WSOP almost has it just right. It can't be all about the players or you don't have a viable business. And it can't be all about the business or the players get pissed off. So you have to walk this line.
Poker's variety.
Limit hold 'em, Omaha 8 or Better, pot-limit Omaha...When you look at the WSOP schedule, they have the most diverse schedule, the most representative of what poker is in terms of the spread of games.
Poker players. They're such amazing people. Many of them I know will go to the mat for me, and I'd go to the mat for them. That's a special gift that the poker community has given me.
